Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP)
Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP)
Foundation paper piecing is a quilting technique that uses a paper pattern as a base to construct accurate and intricate blocks. Unlike English paper piecing where you sew around the paper, in FPP, the fabric pieces are stitched directly onto the paper foundation, following the printed lines.
Benefits of FPP:
- Accuracy: Guarantees precise seams and angles.
- Intricate Designs: Ideal for complex shapes and small pieces.
- Stability: The paper provides support during construction.
Basic Steps:
- Prepare the Foundation: Print or trace the pattern onto foundation paper. Ensure the pattern includes seam allowances.
- Cut Fabric: Cut fabric pieces slightly larger than the paper sections, allowing for a small seam allowance.
- Stitch Fabric: Following the pattern's order, stitch fabric pieces to the paper foundation, leaving small gaps at the ends.
- Trim and Press: Once the block is complete, trim away excess fabric and press seams open.
- Remove Paper: Carefully remove the paper foundation.
Tips for Success:
- Use a sharp needle and thread: This will prevent fabric from shifting.
- Pin fabric securely: Prevent fabric from moving while stitching.
- Check fabric placement frequently: Ensure accurate alignment.
- Press carefully: Avoid damaging the paper foundation.
